When the doors of Vintage Faire Mall opened in March of 1977 it quickly became a popular spot for Modesto shoppers. Over the decades the stores have changed, but through innovation and expansion, it has remained a top shopping destination for the region.

Just like so many other businesses, Vintage Faire Mall, which is owned by Macerich, had to temporarily close the doors in 2020 because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. But when given the opportunity to welcome back shoppers, mall management did so by making sure they were coming back to an environment with safety and convenience in mind. Vintage Faire is utilizing high-performing filters in the heating and cooling systems that are typically used at hospitals. They’ve also employed the use of electrostatic disinfectant sprayers and are offering curbside pick-up for several retailers.

Even with the challenges of the past year Vintage Faire Mall welcomed three new retailers, including Furniture City, which over the three-story anchor space left empty with the closure of Forever 21. The home furnishing store joined Aerie, an intimate apparel and lifestyle brand by American Eagle and Dick’s Sporting Goods in setting up shop in Vintage Faire Mall in 2020.

Dick’s Sporting Goods relocated from an exterior location at the property to the ground floor level of the previous Sear’s store.

A clear sign that the mall remains a primary shopping destination is that even more new stores are opening up. Rainbow, Cricket Wireless, Flirty Falsies, Gypsy Moon Essential Oils, and Q-Luv, are all new to the mall, while Charming Charlie has made a return. Additionally, Macy’s Backstage has opened up in the lower level of the Macy women’s store.

Rainbow is a fashion retailer offering affordable clothing, shoes and accessories for women, juniors, plus sizes and kids.

Cricket Wireless will be offering cell phones and other devices on the lower level of the mall.

Flirty Falsies is a retailer of MYLASHXO luxury lashes and will be operating in a new kiosk near the center court.

Gypsy Moon Essential Oils is headquartered in California and specializes in essential oils that promote mental, physical, and spiritual healing.

Q-Luv is a women’s plus size store selling trendy apparel, shoes and accessories.

Charming Charlie returns to the outdoor Village with a selection of handbags, jewelry, sunglasses, and other accessories.

Macy’s Backstage is a discount avenue of the retailer that offers clothing, shoes, accessories, toys, home , skincare and other items  at discounted prices. The items are specifically purchased for Macy’s Backstage and are not the clearance items from Macy’s.

The upper level of the old Sear’s building will be filled by Dave & Buster’s, a popular, large-format entertainment and dining concept that is slated to open fall of 2021.

“Dave & Buster’s will be an exciting destination for our Modesto community – for families, for date nights, for friends and co-workers getting together and more,” said cAnnie Amies. “The broad appeal of Dave & Buster’s will add energy to our property by bringing more people in to spend time at Vintage Faire – especially at times that complement our retailers. For example, weeknight traffic at Dave & Buster’s is expected to be robust, when activity at many retailers is less busy.”

Once Dave & Buster’s goes into the second floor location of the former Sear’s store, all of the anchor spots at Vintage Faire Mall will be occupied. But more than anchor stores, innovation and finding new enticements to bring shoppers in are what keeps the mall as a economic driver for Modesto.

“Our industry has come a long way from the days when an “anchor” was exclusively defined as a department store,” Amies said. “New anchors like Dick’s Sporting Goods and Dave & Buster’s deliver what shoppers want today, including sports equipment, athletic apparel and footwear and fresh, fun entertainment. Now, even non-retail anchors can help make a great shopping center even better, and new uses like office, residential and hotel bring different kinds of traffic to a property at different times of the day and night to complement the retail offerings. It’s important that every anchor – no matter what the use – bring energy and traffic to the overall property campus.”

Helping bring some new energy to Vintage Faire Mall, while also giving guests a different experience are the Light Rocket rentals and virtual reality pods. Perhaps one of the most popular activities Vintage Faire Mall offers is the Kid’s club, which has gone virtual over the last year.
